Maths Café: Pop in and Solve Your Maths Problems at Brunel University

We created a drop-in centre for 2 weeks, providing maths support just before the exam period, primarily for non-A level students.

Located in a central movement area, a café style was adopted (with red gingham table cloths, free drinks + snacks) to target high pedestrian traffic.

Students came from 4 main programmes (Economics; Foundations of Engineering; Foundations of IT and Financial Computing).

Of these, 81% required help with mathematical methods rather than statistics; 62% of students needed help with Calculus!

This was a pilot for a more integrated approach to remedial support in 2009 and subsequent years.

Result: 352 students accessed one-to-one support over a 2 week period.
