Project Evaluation: West London Maths Working Group
Sunday 01 November 2009 Permlink

The West London Maths Working Group (MWG) was established in December 2007 at the suggestion of Kerry Schutz, West London LLN STEM Sector Manager, after proposing the idea at a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Sector Steering Group (STEM SSG) meeting.
Just prior to this, we asked academic staff from our partner institutions to help create a Maths Matrix, to establish the level of mathematics learners needed, to study particular STEM subjects.
This process enabled the SSG to clearly see the variation in the level of maths needed in similar subjects at different institutions.
It was felt that the STEM SSG was too large and unwieldy to further investigate and organise the necessary actions to tackle the problems posed by mathematical challenges to vocational learners in HE and as a result, the smaller MWG was formed.
