The signing of a Progression Agreement will formalise entry routes between RHUL and EHWLC so vocational learners will be guaranteed equal consideration on RHUL’s Computer Science course.

RHUL will provide a number of places for students from the Advanced IT Diploma from EHWLC, and treat these students with the same parity of esteem as A Level entrants in terms of support at interview and throughout the admissions process.

RHUL will also provide individual feedback to all unsuccessful applicants from Uxbridge if requested.

Chris Watson, IT Division Manager, EHWLC, said: “This is a ground-breaking development for learners at the College. For the first time our level 3 learners can achieve a qualification module by attending a University.

“This experience has raised individual aspirations to include progression to such prestige institutions as Royal Holloway, thereby helping them create a new personal vision of their future. Additionally resource sharing and learner visits have further enabled us to provide significant added value to learners.

“The structure of our IT Advanced Diploma has enabled partnerships with Royal Holloway, the BBC, local schools and the Local Authority which has brought outstanding additional benefit to learners.”

Dr Adrian Johnstone, Head of Department, Computer Science, RHUL said: “At Royal Holloway, we believe passionately that IT Diploma students should be given an opportunity to acquire practical programming skills.

“We think that limiting students to just IT user and system configuration experience would be a missed opportunity. We’re offering a tailored version of our introductory ‘Programming in Java for Lego Robots’ course to Diploma students from Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College in an effort to bridge the gap between College and University, with an associated progression agreement for students who do well on all components of the Diploma, to G400 Computer Science.”

Graeme Hall, Executive Director, WL LLN commented: “This Progression Agreement is a clear guide to the guaranteed options available to learners wanting to progress into Higher Education at Royal Holloway, University of London from Ealing, Hammersmith &West London College.

“It provides the framework around which the College and its University partner can build a closer relationship which will result in a more tailored, focussed and comprehensive support structure to ensure more learners progress to, and succeed in, Higher Education.

“The work already done in sharing teaching expertise and facilities, curriculum matching and student visits is a terrific example of what can be done to help the learner and underlines the value of agreements such as these.”
