The WL LLN Progression Agreements clarify entry requirements into Higher Education and ensures that Capel Manor College’s vocational learners, who successfully complete the new Foundation Degree in Garden Design in Practice or new Foundation Degree in Horticulture, will be guaranteed entry onto the BSc Honours in Professional Studies at Birkbeck, University of London (Level 6).
Dr Steve Dowbiggin OBE, Chief Executive, Capel Manor College, said: “We will finally be able to provide those living in London with the opportunity to engage in the management and development of our green and open spaces and to progress their careers to degree/full professional level without leaving London.
“It has been a shame that up until now, those who wanted a degree in horticulture and lived in London, had to move out of the capital and could not afford to come back.
“Now we can keep our best home grown talent and they can help us realise the potential of London to be the garden city of the world.”
One of the major factors stopping London and Londoners achieving this potential is the lack of skills, career structure and ambition.
Dean Pateman, Academic Registrar, Birkbeck, University of London, said: “Birkbeck is delighted to be working in partnership with Capel Manor College. The programmes are innovative and unique and represent the beginning of a new era in the provision of horticulture related study for London and beyond.”
The new Foundation Degrees have been designed for those with serious intentions of working in the industry or for those who are already working in the industry and wish to progress their careers.
The WL LLN Progression Agreements will provide vocational learners with more opportunities and help to improve career prospects.
John McDonald, Heathrow Sector Co-ordinator, said: “The Progression Agreements are a real milestone for the green skills sector in London.
“Prospective apprentices and 14-19 Diploma learners will be able to see clear progression routes into HE in this area.”
