Apart from the day-to-day management of the team and reporting to our funding body, HEFCE, much of my time is taken up with liaising with our Network partners – ensuring that we are responding to the real needs of vocational learners in West London. There are five Lifelong Learning Networks in London and we are tying to establish a number of Pan-London activities which offer economies of scale in delivery without loosing the sub-regional expertise of each network. This is quite a challenge as each network was set up in a different way and our objectives do not necessarily coincide.

I have personal responsibility for the development of Progression Agreements which will allow vocational learners the same consideration when applying for a place on a Higher Education course as those learners with the more familiar A-level qualifications. Additionally, I am keen to see Higher Education take a higher profile in the reduction of re-offending by offering Foundation Degrees with real employment prospects to those ex-offenders that are willing, or able, to participate fully in such programmes. In many cases this will mean offering the curriculum in a more flexible, imaginative and challenging way.

The Health & Social Care sectors are undergoing considerable reform in terms of workforce development. As a consequence, our partner institutions and employers in the West London sub-region face challenges responding to complex policy changes. A key role of my post is to creatively find ways of working with partners to develop qualifications which are fit for purpose, fit for award and above all, meaningful for vocational learners. A good example of this is the implementation of Sector Skills Agreements which map out the strategic direction for a more flexible workforce based on competence. To achieve this aim, Foundation Degrees, the 14-19 Diplomas, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), work-based learning and flexible delivery are all curriculum areas that I am developing. I also see a need to work alongside other sectors such as criminal justice, training and development.

My role is to lead on all Network activities related to Heathrow Airport. I spend much of my time “on the road” working with curriculum colleagues from our network partners across West London. This makes for interesting and challenging days as I can have discussions with logistics, green skills and tourism experts all in one day. The nature of the projects are varied and can include event organisation, employer engagement and degree planning. Another priority of mine is the development of 14-19 Diplomas and making sure there are available progression routes for learners from these into Further and Higher Education.

I am aiming to create new pathways into Science, Technology and Engineering, by creating bridging courses that prepare new entrants for success and allow others to laterally move over to these subjects to change their career. With new Foundation Degrees in Science (FdSc) and Engineering (FdEng), learning is now more flexible. This is acheived through pod-casting, online/distance learning, work-based learning and using workplace projects that tease out problem solving activities. There are CPD opportunities as well, so those in industry can become involved with education and help identify what work activities can be adapted as assessed work-based learning opportunities. Give me a call if you work in a science related industry or want to join an industry liaison group, because together we can create pathways that will help others progress and achieve higher qualifications through work-based learning programmes.
