Meet the team

Apart from the day-to-day management of the team and reporting to our funding body, HEFCE, much of my time is taken up with liaising with our Network partners – ensuring that we are responding to the real needs of vocational learners in West London. There are five Lifelong Learning Networks in London and we are trying to establish a number of Pan-London activities which offer economies of scale in delivery without losing the sub-regional expertise of each Network. This is quite a challenge as each Network was set up in a different way and our objectives do not necessarily coincide.
I have personal responsibility for the development of Progression Agreements which will allow vocational learners the same consideration when applying for a place on a Higher Education course as those learners with the more familiar A-level qualifications.

The Health & Social Care sectors are undergoing considerable reform in terms of workforce development. As a consequence, our partner institutions and employers in the West London sub-region face challenges responding to complex policy changes. A key role of my post is to creatively find ways of working with partners to develop qualifications which are fit for purpose, fit for award and above all, meaningful for vocational learners. A good example of this is the implementation of Sector Skills Agreements which map out the strategic direction for a more flexible workforce based on competence. To achieve this aim, Foundation Degrees, the 14-19 Diplomas, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), work-based learning and flexible delivery are all curriculum areas that I am developing. I also see a need to work alongside other sectors such as criminal justice, training and development.

Phase II work for July 2010 to July 2011 will be embedding the project work of the past 3.5 years. I am working at transferring the learning from these projects into other institutions throughout the UK. We are creating opportunities for non-traditional learners and those from black, minority and ethnic groups to gain their place in Science, Technology and Engineering subjects by helping them prepare for higher education. Over 1,000 learners have benefited from our maths support programmes. Our findings and outcomes are being widely disseminated by publication, as well as presenting the various ‘models’ at dozens of workshops and conferences during 2010-11. If you work with vocational learners who wish to progress to higher education, please get in touch so we can learn from your work and share your success stories.

I lead on all the technology projects that the LLN supports. This includes creating on-line materials for vocational courses, exploring innovative ways to make processes such as APEL quicker and more efficient and finding new technologies which can assist our Network Partners with teaching and learning.
