The number of people with long-term conditions is likely to grow. Lord Darzi’s paper Framework for Action asks questions as to how new ways of working could provide better patient care and a more rewarding job for staff.

His proposals include the setting up of ‘Polyclinics,’ which would offer a wide-range of high-quality services, over extended hours, to the community.

They could consist of existing GP clinics (networked together with a local hub for services such as diagnostics), bigger same-site centres, or attached to a hospital.

Polyclinics could also provide some mental health services. They would be open for longer hours than a GP practice, and could encourage patients with early signs of mental health problems to present themselves.

Mental health staff could therefore play a greater role in earlier preventative care. More mental health workers could be employed to deliver cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and other `talking therapies.’

This is particularly relevant given the recent increased funding for CBT.
