In conjunction with Thames Valley University, the West London Lifelong Learning Network surveyed a wide range of substance misuse service providers (September 2007).
The survey used the Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) to inform questions about workforce development needs.
The results will help develop a Foundation Degree in Substance Use and Misuse as well as identifying skills gaps in this field.
Preliminary analysis of the survey data has found:
- the majority of respondents came from staff working in the voluntary sector (62%) followed by the NHS (19%)
- 56% said they might be interested in supporting the development of a Foundation Degree in Substance Use and Misuse and 31% said they would fully support the Foundation Degree
- the response to provision of non-financial support was overwhelmingly positive: time in lieu (64%); study time for exams (93%); input to work-based projects (71%)
- the most convenient and practical method of delivery for the Foundation Degree was a mix of day release plus evening (36%) and distance learning (36%)
A full report will be made available to stakeholders on the website in the near future.
