Course Overview
This is a vocational course that aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge
to practise as garden designers. It combines a solid knowledge base in landscape
and horticultural practices with design studies. The broad range of topics covered on
the course is intended to open up wider career prospects in the landscape industry
and related professions.

- Plant Selection and Plant Establishment
- Principles and Practice of Horticulture
- Principles and Practice of Land-based Business
- Introduction to Lifelong Learning and Personal Development Planning
Level 5
- Garden Design and CAD in Practice
- Gardens and Plants in History
- Planting Design
- Principles and Practice of Hard Landscaping
- The Science, Ecology and Biodiversity of Gardens
- Garden Design: a Professional Practice Portfolio (option)
OR
- Land-based Industry Research Project (option)
Students successfully completing Year 1 modules only may, subject to examination board approval, be awarded the Certificate HE in Garden Design (120 CATS).
Assessment
The modules making up this course are generally assessed through coursework, with some elements being assessed through examination.
Progression Route
On successful completion there will be an opportunity to progress on to the BA Honours in Professional Studies at Birkbeck University.
Entry Requirements
Students will normally have at least one subject at A2 preferably Biology or an Art/
Design subject. An appropriate BTEC National Award/Certifi cate/Diploma or equivalent qualifications will be considered.
Applications from students with some Horticultural and/or Garden Design qualifi cations or extensive experience in the industry are welcome to discuss opportunities for Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning.
Applications from mature students (including those with non-traditional entry profi les) are welcome.
