Course Overview

This course is primarily intended for adults who work or hope to work in the Psychology/Counselling sectors (either as paid employment or voluntary work), although younger students would be considered. The student should expect to complete the course in two to four years.

The sort of work that students might be involved in/become involved in are youth work, counselling and mental health.

Course Structure (including modules/assessment methods):

The course has a range of modules including:

For each module it is expected that students will spend 50% of their time on academic learning and 50% on work-based learning.

Bridging modules for basic skills are available on an optional basis.

Assessment

There are three types of assessments for the majority of modules: a written piece of work submitted towards the end of each module, a workbook which is ongoing throughout each module and a piece of work carried out in one or more of the seminars.

Progression Route

Students may progress to the Applied Psychological Studies degree course (Level 6) at St Mary’s University College, or to the 2nd year of the level 4 Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at West Thames College.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be willing to engage in appropriate employment and have:

Mature applicants over 21 years of age on admission with other appropriate evidence.
