Course Overview
Thames Valley University’s Institute for Information Technology (IIT) has been working with Cisco to develop innovative, flexible, and cost-effective solutions to IT training. For those working with IT systems – networking, PC support, help desk – then the Computer Systems Network Programme (CSNP) may provide the training solution.
CSNP is an innovative course because it offers a blend of academic and vocational training and support. Students will gain a Foundation Degree in Computing and Information Systems plus the Cisco Certified Network Associate qualification.

Cisco Content
- Unit One: Network terminology and protocols, local and wide area networks, Open SystemInterconnection models, cabling, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, and network standards.
- Unit Two: Initial router configuration, Cisco IOS Software management, routing protocol configuration, TCP/IP, and access control lists.
- Unit Three: Advanced IP addressing techniques, intermediate routing protocols, commandline interface configuration of switches, Ethernet switching, Virtual LANs.
- Unit Four: Network Address Translation, Port Address Translation, WAN technology and terminology, Network management.
Assessment
Assessments are carried out using a variety of methods including assignments, group work, presentation, reflective portfolios and examinations. Students will have the opportunity to take commercial assessments through Cisco and also for some modules students are given the opportunity to do work-based assessment.
Progression Route
The course will allow students to build upon their work experience. Students will be allowed to continue with their studies on a one year open learning ‘top-up’ to a full BSc (Hons) degree.
Entry Requirements
This course is designed for those already in employment who do not have a higher education qualification. Students will be considered on evidence of their ability to benefit from the course and those without qualifications but with suitable experience within the IT Professional and IT User communities are encouraged to apply. All applicants must be working in an IT area.
