Course Overview

This Foundation Degree (FdA) is a practical and attractive programme of study for people who are looking to develop an entrepreneurial idea, set up their own business or develop themselves and their business’s potential, regardless of sector or business type. Participants will have the opportunity to study and set-up/run their own businesses at the same time.

Developing your personal and business skills; understanding the business environment; creating and managing budgets; cash flows and raising finance; marketing and sales; developing your IT skills (including web design); understanding and applying e-business techniques; managing projects and growing your business; how to employ the right people.

Practical application of skills; support and advice throughout from tutors and mentors; flexible; high quality workspace can be provided in one of our outreach Enterprise Centres in Acton, Southall and Slough with excellent IT facilities and access to wider University services. Your start up business will be more likely to succeed with the skills and knowledge you will gain from this course.

Course Structure (including modules/assessment methods)

Formal teaching will be for approximately 1 day per week, this will be supplemented, where appropriate, with individual/group interactions with expert tutors, coaches and mentors.

Modules:

Year 1 (Level 4)
Term 1: Enterprise and Entrepreneurship: Attitude and Skills Development Academic Study Skills
Term 2: Essential IT for Business Negotiated Work Based Learning
Term 3: Marketing and Web Design for Business Planning and Financing your Business

Year 2 (Level 5)

Term 1: Legal, Social and Ethical Issues in Small Business Communication for Business
Term 2: Managing Retail operations Negotiated Work Based Learning
Term 3: Leadership: Enhanced Management Skills Enterprise and Business Development

Assessment

All assignments/assessments are relevant to your particular enterprise/business start up. The emphasis is on learning by applying and practising the knowledge, skills and understanding to situations facing every entrepreneur and the businesses they are involved in.

Progression Route

Students can also choose to progress to the final level of the BA (Hons) Business Studies.

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications are required, but may be considered. You are expected to demonstrate evidence of the ability to study at level 4 and beyond. This may be assessed by portfolio plus an essay of approximately 500 words on why the course is appropriate to you.
