The National STEM Programme
The National STEM Programme is a three-year initiative funded by the Higher Education Funding Councils for England and Wales (HEFCE/HEFCW). The Programme aims to increase and widen participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and enhance the skills and knowledge base of the workforce in these areas.
Whilst particular emphasis is on engineering, physics and chemistry it is recognised that mathematics covers a broad cross-section of curricula. As a result, the National STEM Programme is providing ‘seed’ funding to establish regional Maths Sigma Hubs.
The first meeting of the London/South East regional hub will be held on 24th September 2010 at Brunel University. Colleagues interested in the teaching and learning of mathematics are invited to attend, to establish the Hub and become part of a collaborative group, sharing experience, ideas and resources.
Attendance is free (spaces are limited, so please book early).

Over the course of the next 2 years, we will be addressing maths teaching and learning and some main themes related to the objectives of the National STEM Agenda:
a) Integration and diversity – to widen and enlarge entry to mathematical sciences undergraduate courses, and embed approaches into universities.
b) Employer engagement – looking at employer needs in basic and high-level mathematics and statistics and in the application of scientific and mathematical knowledge in order to meet the Government’s wish to improve work-force skills, and exploring implications for the HE curriculum.
c) HE curriculum innovation – exploring current learning, teaching and assessment practices and disseminating good practice. This includes online delivery of maths, where we have a lot of good practice that can be extended to other universities at NO cost, as well as e-assessment projects that are underway and which are easily duplicable or cost-free.
d) Mathematical sciences support – establishing and extending a network for maths support in universities, building on sigma’s regional hub model, working together to share experience and resources which are pedagogically developed and working well.
