Progressing the Vocational Learner: Advancing the Apprentice into HE

Advancing the Apprentice into HE

Date:Monday 23 February 2009

Time:10:00 - 16:00

Venue: Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, London

The London Lifelong Learning Networks conference Progressing the Vocational Learner: Advancing the Apprentice into HE took place on the 23rd February at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.

It provided attendees with practical information on advising apprentices who want to progress to HE.

West Thames College Foundation Degree student, Sarah Reilly, who discussed her experiences of progressing from the Advanced Apprenticeship to HE.

Sarah explained the complexities of working full-time and spending her evenings and weekends studying. Nevertheless, she said it was worthwhile and she plans to continue studying once her Foundation Degree is completed.

Professor Alison Fuller, the Keynote Speaker, emphasised that the Advanced Apprenticeship was not a qualification but a wrapper for a programme of qualifications – NVQ3 and Key Skills mandatory, Technical Certificate are usual but can be optional.

At the moment, the only way to measure the value and worth of the Advanced Apprenticeship as a route to HE is the qualification it includes in each Framework.

As yet there is not a clear mechanism for, or agreement about, how the Advanced Apprenticeship could be valued in terms of its currency as a route to and through HE.

On the basis of qualifications, the value of most Advanced Apprenticeships is weak compared to the value attached to low grade A Levels: why is a student with two Es automatically more welcome to HE than someone who has completed an Advanced Apprenticeship?

Presentations will be available on the South East London Lifelong Learning Network website soon.
