eLearning for Transition, Progression and Retention - Getting Started with eLearning

Potential transitional students from the WL LLN region were invited at the end of July this year to participate in the ‘Getting started with u-Link’ eLearning programme at Brunel University over two weeks.

Thereafter, the invitation was extended to potential mature and transitional students from elsewhere in the UK.

The programme was scheduled to commence on the 18th August and aimed to actively introduce new transitional students to the features and tools of the virtual learning environment (u-Link).

A total of 125 responses to the invitations were received. A complimentary memory stick was mailed to everyone who responded, containing the eLearning orientation presentations that were offered early in July at the Southall site of Ealing Hammersmith and West London College, as well as the Willesden campus of the College of North West London.

In addition, logon details were provided to the individuals who responded. It should be noted that many potential students had conditional acceptances only. Actual participation in the eLearning programme was entirely voluntary.

Initial monitoring reports indicate that a total of 46 students are participating quite actively in the ‘Getting started with u-Link’ programme.

Following completion, a report on general student activity during the programme will be disseminated, including an overview of student evaluations.

An invitation to participate in a ‘higher education preparation’ (HEP) programme will be offered during September 2008, as well as an opportunity to participate in a personal development programme with e-portfolios for the rest of the first year.
