The new Diplomas “went large” last week with two helpings of publicity!
Firstly, a survey claimed that fewer than 4 out of 10 university admissions tutors see Vocational Diploma as a good alternative to A Levels, this was followed by mocking reports of McDonald’s winning approval to offer Level 3 courses as part of the Diploma.
Vocational Diplomas offer a pathway to work, Higher Education, or a blend of both – they are not intended to replace A Levels.
The proper way to think about Diplomas is a different, more appropriate pathway for some learners.
The link to employers is crucial in providing the proper blend of real world experience with academic rigour.
McDonald’s, Flybe and Network Rail are to be applauded for getting involved and doing more that just moaning about qualifications not providing the kind of skills employers need.
The Prime Minister added to the vocational debate by calling for 1 in 5 young people to be on apprenticeships – it really seems that the skills debate is getting the high level support it deserves.
